FAQs
How does one go about becoming a Fly Girl of the Week?
Any woman with a creative background or interests can submit their nomination to flygirlblog[@]aol[dot]com. Here's a link that describes the process in detail.
What advice would you give to any black woman who's thinking about going to art school?
Don't be afraid to explore your heritage/culture in your form of creative expression. If and when you do don't be defensive when your peers or professors don't understand where you're coming from. Also, don't be afraid to ask for help, there is always someone who wants to and can help you. And don't give up. Art school is hard as hell; don't give up, we need more women of color in creative professions.
Where do you find your inspiration for your work?
Everywhere. Magazines, online, old books, everywhere. I'm always looking for new stuff to collect and paste into my inspiration books and when I look back I have everything from modern patterns to vintage cheese labels, fabric swatches to Pantone chips. I love playing with color combos so I'm always cutting up squares from various sources and mixing them up to create fun funky patterns.
Where can I buy your artwork/prints?
Thanks so much for your interest in my work. You can purchase prints at I Love My Hair.
What products do you use for your hair?
I frequently switch up products, I'm always trying something new. Check out this link to see a few I like, some of which I've removed or switched out. Lately I stick with Kinky-Curly's Knot Today Leave in Conditioner and my own mixture of coconut oil, shea butter, and aloe vera gel.
How do you do some of the hairstyles you wear?
You can visit my Youtube page to see some video tutorials on my natural hairstyles.
I'm visiting Philly, do you have any suggestions on what to do and where to go?
I'm hoping to put together a comprehensive Philly guide for visitors, until then you can check out the boutiques, webisodes and yum sections of Fly where I feature cool spots to check out in Philly.
How can I be a Fly sponsor?
After you browsed around the site to see if Fly is a good fit for your business, feel free to shoot me an email with your company/product information.
