Tribune Standard

I ADORE these looks from Tribune Standard. The prints look as if they were inspired by vintage tropical graphics or even wallpaper, which I love. If my boobs were smaller I would totally rock the oufit bottom right.

I'm also diggin' the make-up, it's dramatic and bold. What do you think?

Diaspora: The Art of Blackness Photos

Although I could not attend Diaspora: The Art of Blackness, which I posted about last week, Fly reader Chinye was kind enough to send over a few photos and a brief summary of the event. Thanks, Chinye!

The crisp Friday night weather in Chicago was a perfect excuse to be indoors admiring beautiful art. I attended Diaspora: The Art of Blackness which showcased photographs, paintings, and designs by African-American artists to celebrate the month of Black History.

Pulling up to the venue located within Chicago's meat packing district, I was totally unprepared for the striking art and beautiful people who awaited inside. Once I entered the space, I could see and hear DJ Mark Fullafla spinning old school hip hop and R&B classics reminiscent of the early 90s. In addition to the soul thumping music and creative energy flowing throughout the various rooms filled with people chatting and connecting, the featured exhibit itself was most importantly inspiring. Roots of Style by Isabel Toledo

Remember that beautiful inauguration dress Michelle Obama wore to all the inauguration day festivities back in 2009? The designer was Mrs. Isabel Toledo, and I am so very excited about the release of her new book Roots of Style: Weaving Together Life, Love, and Fashion (March 6 release). The book shares the life of Toledo in the form of stories as well as illustrations created by her husband and amazing fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo.

Several years back I attended a tour of both Ruben and Isabel's work at the Museum of FIT, led by the featured artists themselves. I was inspired by how they each spoke so passionatetly about design and illutsration but what was most moving is how passionately they spoke about their love and respect for each other. It was beautiful.

I'm looking forward to see what more they have to share and can't wait to add this book to my library.

Autumn Adeigbo Fall 2012

Fabulous looks from Autumn Adeigbo's Fall 2012 Collection. The textural pink and blue patterns in some pieces surprisingly mesh well with the graphic black and white patterns in other designs, and I love all of her structured silhouettes, some hinting back to vintage styles from the 70's and 80's. Love.

Diaspora: The Art of Blackness

I wish I was in Chicago to attend this AIGA sponsored event called Diaspora: The Art of Blackness: an exhibition of art, design and music in honor of Black History Month. The promo poster by Lashun Tines is beautiful!

J.Crew Spring

Cool looks from J.Crew's spring collection. I think I could pull off most of these looks, not too sure about the floral jumpsuit. I mean, I love the way it looks on the model but I don't know that I could rock it; as well as that sparkly skirt (bottom right). So dope, but too long for my petite frame. What do you think?

Frida at Artisphere

An exhibition showcasing a collection of personal photographs taken by the renown artist, Frida Kahlo, opens today at Artisphere (an urban arts center) in Arlington, VA. I can't wait to check it out, along with the programs surrounding the exhibition.

What do you do? Owner and designer of Cake Mixstore. Cake develops hand printed interior accessories for people with an outspoken and original taste for high quality interior products. I work in a studio on unique limited edition silkscreen prints, which I print by hand. The old fashioned, quality labor products have a modern and fashionable look.

What inspires you? Basically everyone who uses authentic printing techniques to make their handmade goods.

Why are you fly? I am colorful, unique, layered and complex, sweet and delicious just like a cake.

Advice: Don’t be too stubborn to ask for advice, but always go with your gut feeling when it comes to making decisions. Do what you love, and love what you do!
