There were two things I learned the summer of 2001: my hair was fab naturally and that life is too short. Two weeks after my big chop I was coming home from a Jill Scott concert when I learned Aaliyah left us. I couldn't believe it was so. We were the same age and for the first time I looked at my life and thought, wow we can leave this world at any time. I mean I knew, but I didn't — I was young. I thought I was invincible.
I had just seen this young woman who was talented, seemed sweet and genuine performing on 106 & Park. She was just on my favorite morning radio show promoting her latest album, Aaliyah. She was just here with us and suddenly taken away.
So yes life is too short, remember to live each day with love, passion, and patience.
Today let's celebrate this artist's life and legacy. Thank you, Aaliyah, for leaving us with your voice, your fantastic videos with glorious choreography, and your exquisite beauty. (And thank you for making baggy jeans and sweatshirts look hot on a lady.) We miss you.
Do you have a favorite Aaliyah song? I really love "Rock The Boat," "Hot like Fire," and of course her cover of "At Your Best You Are Love." One of my favorite videos is "More Than a Woman" — I can't decide.
