Value yourself and your work.
The one thing that irks me
the most is when people and business entities take advantage of creative
individuals. Whether we are working in-house or freelancing we are
far too often undervalued, but sadly it's not
their fault. We can't expect others to know our value and understand
our rights unless we understand them ourselves.
As a graphic designer and illustrator I know firsthand how our creative contributions are perceived. I've had my own good and bad experiences, but also appreciate when I learn of others having similar occurances. I was just on Craigslist the other day and saw a response to a gig post. A designer was ranting about a person offering $20 for someone to design a company logo. What an insult. I don't care if you're a sophomore design student just learning how to use Adobe Illustrator, $20 is a joke. Sadly someone out there will do it for that amount, and this is the problem. Whether it qualifies as a good logo or not that person is devaluing the worth of an entire profession. [[read more here]]
