AfroReggae started out as a group encouraging the youth of the favela communities ("shanty towns") in Rio de Janiero to avoid drugs and violence. Through music like hip-hop and reggae they were able to provide a positive alternative to hanging out in the streets. AfroReggae has now evolved into an organization that provides social activities like dance, art, and now fashion. Marcelo Sommer, a well-known fashion designer in Brazil, created a collection and brand with AfroReggae with the help of the communities they service. I think it's a wonderful way to bring together different disciplines and ideas to help and expose young people to bigger and better things.
