Breakfast in SoHo

Hello all, I usually do not post on the weekends but I will not have access to a computer most of the day on Monday so I decided to post a day early.

Saturday I had breakfast with an old friend, Britt, and her friend Andrea (who is now a new friend to me). It was the earliest I had ever been up and out on a Saturday in SoHo. We met at the popular Balthazar hoping for a big brunch spread, but unfortunately it was too early (we were there at nine), they don't start their brunch menu until ten so we settled for homemade donuts, coffee, and I had a roasted red pepper cheese omelet (yum).

As I mentioned before I usually can't stand SoHo because of all the tourists getting in the way and how every store or restaurant is overcrowded, but because it was so early the restaurant was very quiet, the stores just opening for business were empty and the employees were ever so sweet because it was the beginning of new day.

It was so cold I only got one picture of the empty street in SoHo, sorry it's not even that great of a picture.

Let Them Eat Cake

Has anyone seen Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette? I did about a week ago and I thought it was visually amazing. It was rich with pinks, baby blues, and sea foam greens which purely reflected the art period of that time, Rococo. I love Rococo because it was very girly, very pastel-y and sweet, or as my art history professor explained, "everything looked like icing on a cake."  I am amused that Marie Antoinette allegedly said, "Let them eat cake," during a time when everyone in France were starving and everything in art, fashion, and sometimes architecture did in fact look like cake.

Laura Levine

Today at work we had a meeting in a different boardroom and hanging on the walls were these beautiful acrylic paintings that were acquired by MTV Networks. The colors were brilliant in person. I was so intrigued that I had to look up the artist, Laura Levine. Her work is really fun and quirky, check it out.

Lauryn Hill Inspired

I love the styling in this Lauryn Hill photo. I think I would be bold enough to rock the booty shorts but I was trying to figure out a way to combine the different colors and textures to achieve a different look. Check out the more conservative version of her outfit, it’s a great look for work. I love the feminine ruffles, the casual khaki green thrown together with the sexy cheetah print pumps, oh and the yellow for color. It’s gorgeous.

Fly Girl of the Week

I am introducing a new segment to my blog, it’s called Fly Girl of the Week. Every week you’ll meet a new young lady who is incredibly fly. Not only will you get to find out why she’s fly but you’ll learn about who she is, where she’s from and what she does. She will talk about what inspires her and I hope in some way she will be able to inspire you. I will post a reminder before the first Fly Girl so please be on the look out because it’s going to be fun and of course FLY.

Brazil is in Me

When I was 10 years old, the summer of my fourth grade year my mother sent me to Rio de Janiero to stay with family for two months. I had been once before when I was four, but this was my first time really experiencing the city and understanding where my mother was born. I remember a lot of things about that trip, but my first day there sticks in my mind more than anything else. I remember being so excited to see my family, I remember being picked up from the airport and for the first time realizing that I did not speak Portuguese that well and wondering how I was going to tell these people that I was hungry? I panicked for about 5 seconds as I went over some phrases and hand gestures that would keep me from starving. I remember my cousin climbing a tree in her neighbor’s yard to pick a guava berry. It was gross when I tasted it but by the time I left Brazil I was eating them regularly. I also remember saying a curse word in Portuguese that made that same cousin gasp (my mother loved teaching me those).

Being there was perfect at that age. I’ve been back twice since then and although I’ve had fun during those most recent visits, that time when I was ten was perfect. Everything was fun, everything was new, the smells the tastes the sounds. I wish I could live there for a year to just explore and inhale everything the way I did back then. Anyway, here is a little collage of a place that is very much apart of me.
