Gee's Bend

I saw these amazing quilts at the Whitney Museum a few years ago. It was an exhibition about the women of Gee's Bend, Alabama who traditionally made quilts out of any fabric they could find. Because they made so little money to buy fabric at stores they created a unique style using any leftover fabric scraps (jeans, old t-shirts, etc) to create these divine pieces. I built this color palette based on some of their quilts. Also, here's a great site to learn more.

Mosaic Garden

My good friend Rahil took these pictures of a mosaic garden in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, I don't know too much about this magnificent mural of colorful glass and stone but everytime I walk by it I am always amazed. Thanks, Ra!

Flea Market Part 1

Sunday  I went to one of my  favorite  markets in the city,  the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market. On a beautiful day  it's always jammed packed with people and stuff. People are selling everything from vintage shoes to fabrics, paintings and old woodblock letters. Check out the red boots I fell in love with but couldn't fit (tears).

A Little Art for History

This linoleum cut (or linocut – where an image is carved out of linoleum and transfered to paper with ink and pressure) is from the book
Scottsboro, Alabama: A Story in Linoleum Cuts. I bought it because of the artwork but did not realize there was a lot of history behind these prints. This story about nine young black men who were framed for raping a white woman is told through the eyes of an unknown artist. If you're intrigued please check out the book, you will learn a piece of history and be visually inspired.

A little piece of me wish I studied fashion design in college. So when I was experimenting with watercolor recently I tried "designing" dresses I would love to wear. Dang I wish I could sew!!
