On Radar: NeonV

I love magazines and I'm excited to share with you a new publication, neonV, founded by five creatively inspiring young women: Tanekeya word (a Fly favorite), Stephanie N. Mills, Carmela Wingfield, Michelle German (an amazing make-up artist!!) and Kimee Brown. Combine their incredible talents (and fab sense of style) with beautiful photography and design and you get a richly dope bi-annual magazine for the "contemporary peculiar woman" showcasing fashion, art, beauty and travel. I love that part of their mission is to highlight cultural and subculture perspectives. Fab!

I'm so in love with Ebony's Tumblr page, especially the old Fashion Fair ads — I really want to see more of those. This pastel color palette in this cover featuring a 1962 photograph of Dorothy Dandridge is superb.

NYT's Miss Lily's Variety Show

The New York Times' T Magazine captures these fly ladies in items from some of the latest resort collections, as well as highlights products from their fab beauty regimes. I LOVE the photos in this feature and had to share. Read and see more here.

Paper Magazine (one of my favorite publications) talks to the Queen of Hip Hop Soul in their latest nightlife issue.

Nobrow Magazine

At the Baltimore Book Festival this past weekend I stumbled upon a tent-covered stand of zines and indepently published art newspapers. The various publications were beautiful with their hand drawn illustrations, screenprinted pages, and quirky mastheads. I was especially drawn to Nobrow's number five issue, themed A Few of my Favourite Things, where thirty artists were invited to create patterns highlighting their favorite things. It's a beautiful collection of illustrations, all using just four colors. They weren't selling the issue at the festival so I can't wait to order my copy.

Esperanza Spalding in Austin

Esperanza Spalding takes Elle.com on a tour of her new hometown of Austin, Texas. I saw the feature in the print version of the magazine but you can see a few images of her favorite spots throughout the city right here. (The print version of Elle shows more of Esperanza styled in cute outfits, definitely check that out as well.)

Honey + Suede

I was browsing around the magazine aisle at the bookstore and thought, I really miss Honey and Suede magazines.

I'm loving Arise Magazine (such a beautiful publication), but can you imagine if Suede, Honey, and Vibe Vixen were all still available — at once? It's sad that this sounds like an outrageous idea.

Paper's Style Like Me

In the latest issue of Paper Magazine (a BIG favorite of mine) there's a fun feature called "Style Like Me" where some well-known stylists are selected to style models in their likeness. I love all the features, especially the styling by June Ambrose. See all the spreads here and check out June Ambrose's turban shop. (People have been complaining about her turban prices, but they all surely have sold out!)

Elephant Magazine

 
I'm really a sucker for printed material, magazines especially. Browsing around Barnes & Noble I came across Elephant Magazine, a beautifully designed collection of stories, articles and images related to art and visual culture. Issue 5 (with an awesome collage from Valero Doval on the cover) takes a look at the art of collage; which I love! Take a peek in the magazine online and judge for yourself, but I definitely recommend you see it in person.
