Here she is — Afro Blue!
This is the first in a series of limited edition prints called Crowns of Color. Inspired by modern hairstyles, vintage photographs by Seydou Keita, African barbershop signs, woodcuts and graphically printed textiles the prints explore varied illustrated interpretations of hair.
I really love doodling portraits of imaginary characters, especially of women with elaborate or unique hairstyles. With this exploration I was interested in the idea of "nobility" both literally and figuratively.
Here are some images of the books I referenced (currently obsessed with the fairy-tale, Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters)...
and images from my moodboards.
Each print features a portrait a woman rocking a fly 'do with an intricately designed vignette. The prints are screen-printed 2 colors on 80lb cream paper. Each one is signed, dated, and numbered by the artist (me!).
Keep checking back for the release of the other prints to come. In the meantime, to purchase or to learn more about Afro Blue check out the listing on Etsy or ILoveMyHair.com.
