This Thursday, Sept. 15 is the opening reception for visual artist Tanekeya Word's exhibiton entitled Pretty Dope-a-Licious. Inspired by cameo brooches and Victorian aethetics she creates a series of life size cameo brooches with exuberant color, funky textile patterns, and elaborate ornamentation to honor women of the African Diaspora.
With their 'afrofuturistic hairstyles' and colorful energy, Tanekeya calls her mixed media ladies "hybrid chics" — modeled after the very essence she herself exudes; funky, stylish, cross-cultural, and quirky.
I'm so excited that Tanekeya is giving us a sneak peek into her series of Pretty Dope-a-licious ladies.
If you live in the D.C. area I hope you'll take the time to check out the show!
